EMPOWERING IN CLASSROOM LEARNING

OUR TECHNOLOGY

01 / FAST

Teachers are currently spending 20+ minutes per day to sanitize there classrooms. This is time that could be much better utilized in preparing lesson plans and activities to further the learning of their students. When using the Smart Mats system, teachers will simply press a button and the sanitizing system will accomplish all surface sanitation within a minute and thirty seconds with no manual labor.

02 / SAFE

By using this type of system there is no danger due to chemical exposure since all sanitizing fluids used must be water based and EPA certified. While the mats are being sanitized a magnetic locking system will be in place to prohibit children from opening the unit while it is on. To ensure full security the operating system undergoes a full system check between each cycle and an emergency shut off button will be located on the back of the housing unit.

03 / EASY

One of the biggest inputs received from teachers is any solution must be easy to operate. This system is the easiest press and go system in the market. All a teacher must do is select the sanitation fluid used and press start. It's that simple!

MEET SMART MATS

OUR STORY

Our group, the Covidiots, is full of hardworking people whose main goal in life is to help others around them. We strive to improve all qualities of life and as students ourselves, we are highly invested in improving the classroom setting during this pandemic.

OUR VISION

“How might we efficiently sanitize classrooms within a limited time between class sections.”

Our goal is to provide a simple solution to sanitizing classrooms that will be both time and cost efficient for schools. We strive to elevate the classroom setting while also keeping it safe so that students can remain in in-person learning.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

The overall concept of Smart Mats is a student will walk into a classroom, grab their own mat and place it over their desk. These mats are the perfect size to cover the entire surface of that students' desk so that there is no surface contact in their workplace. These mats are created out of a whiteboard material that allows students to write directly on their workplace. After the class period is over, students will be able to scan their mats with their phone and download their work directly to the cloud. Then, as they are leaving the classroom students will place their Smart Mats into the sanitizer, the teacher will press the start button and a clean set of mats will be ready in less than 5 minutes! Our secret to this speedy sanitation.....Electrostatic Spray!

About

Smart Mats System

Housing Unit

The box and locking mechanism are crucial parts of the system. This is the physical place that the mats will be placed in to be sanitized during each class. Given that each class will have up to 30 students, this box must be large enough and powerful enough to accommodate and sanitize each mat.

Sanitation System

An electrostatic system is much simpler than one might think. A liquid sanitizer fluid is stored in a tank that is pumped through the system using a liquid pump. This fluid is then met by another tube connected to an air compressor of 60-70 PSI. This air will then atomize the liquid particles. Once they reach the nozzle the particles are then charged by a nickel electrode at the tip of the nozzle that will then disperse the fluid through a 40 micron nozzle. This electrostatic spray can be imagined as charged particles being pulled towards an opposite charge. This electrostatic charge will cause the sanitation fluid to wrap entirely around the mats in a 3D fashion to ensure every surface of each mat is completely sanitized.

Operating System

The operating system will have three distinct functions. These are the sanitizing function, the maintenance function and the sanitization liquid selection function. The sanitization function is what the system goes through once the user starts the sanitization process. It will start by turning on the lock indicator and performing a systems check to ensure everything runs smoothly. The systems check is always performed before sanitization to ensure prevent any errors or accidents that can occur. It would also check the liquid levels in the storage tank to ensure there is enough sanitization liquid to perform a sanitization function. The rest of the function goes through the timing to spray the liquid and the time to let the system sit. Once the proper time has ran, the timer turns off and the system unlocks itself. The maintenance function is pretty much the mitigation function. It goes through every moving part of the system to ensure it is in proper shape and that the system can run properly and smoothly with no cause for error. Lastly it is very important to know what sanitization liquid is going to be used in the system and the sanitization liquid selection function allows the user to input either the name of the EPA registered liquid name or registration number. This function is vital to the sitting time of the mats to ensure that they are properly sanitized. The user interface will allow the user to manually input the proper liquid.

Scanning Software

The app runs along with the physical properties of the cell phone and a computer. It will have to rely on the cell phone camera as well as the onboard processor when it comes to making the picture into data that the app will use to update to the cloud. This subsystem will utilize the device’s camera in order to scan the contents on the mats. This will be used to export onto any platform of cloud storage that the teacher will use. The app will then use OCR technology to scan and make the words in the picture into information that the computer can use. OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition(OCR), and it works by taking the image and using it to find similarities with different letters if you have scanned a pdf

Mats

The mats will be made of Melamine Construction for durability, scratch resistance, and chemical safety. They will be 18” x 24” so they cover a normal classroom desk space. Each system bought will come with a set of 30, sufficient to supply a state maximum class size plus replacements. In the corner a QR code printed on mat enables scanning of work
